Diary Entry - 2 July 2012 - Sounds of the street...

Need to write a quick regarding some of the crazy sounds one can hear from the street both during the day and into the evening. Its not only the call to prayer that makes this place such a surreal place to live.

Now for the first week, often of an afternoon, one would be confronted with the sound of a vehicle driving around with its loudspeaker blasting, blaring what could only be ascertained as harsh propaganda statements. If Hitler spoke Arabic, then this is exactly how it would sound, broadcasting to the world revolutionary slogans from his very own personal mobile Nuremberg. This vehicle would patrol the streets blasting statements untranslatable. Didn't stop my imagination from running wild though...

"Death To The Capitalist West!"
"Allah Is Our Friend!!"
"The Enemy Is Complacency!"
"Don't Go To Church!"
"Stay Focussed On The Storm Ahead!!"
"Freedom For the Arabic Brotherhood!"

After five days of this I had to leave the compound to investigate, only to be confronted by a guy in a bombed out ute hawking a ton of water melons loaded on the back. If this is what it takes to sell fruit in the local streets, God knows what it would be like if he were distributing subversive literature, or supplying arms for the glory of the revolution!

In the evenings would would often be confronted with what sounded like the local ice cream van. Patrolling the streets blaring some dinky tinny bling blong nursery tune, calling out to the kids like some demonic pied piper, ready to lure them in and hook them on his dairy concocted poison. No such luck - the guy sells gasoline and propane, and drives around the neighbourhood supplying fuel to households for their vehicles and other home appliances.

This, in addition to all the post marriage partying that's been going on, never makes for a dull moment...
